Glen Ridge, NJ
Although compact at 1,286 SF, this 1905 Glen Ridge Tudor thoughtfully maximizes every inch, pairing a space efficient layout with an evocative yet enduring design that honors the home’s original detailing. Just off the foyer, the living room immediately engages and invites. Layered in rich shades of indigo, the space is enveloped in House of Hackney’s Plantasia wallpaper. The depth and detail of the wallcoverings immersive foliage encapsulates and embraces. In collaboration with a local stained-glass studio, the windows flanking the fireplace were restored with traditional leaded glass and jewel-colored accents that complement the tones of blue. Black accents add contrast and contour while walnut wood infuses warmth. Together, this carefully calibrated mix of texture, tone, and craftsmanship transforms the living room into a calm and cozy oasis that feels distinctive yet timeless and connected to the home’s historic character.
Project Story
A balanced blend of mid-century modern and Danish modern furniture brings sophistication and complements the room’s traditional detailing. The iconic Eames lounge and ottoman anchors the corner while the relaxed, yet elegant Hans Wegner Easy Chair adds sculptural lightness with its distinctive shape.
The dining room embraces a global sensibility, where thoughtfully curated pieces from varying countries come together in quiet harmony. A richly hued Turkish rug grounds the space, lending depth beneath a clean lined Danish modern dining table. Arne Jacobson’s iconic Series Seven chairs bring sculptural elegance, while a Noguchi table lamp introduces a soft, organic counterpoint. A handcrafted table runner and candelabra by artisans in Mexico add warmth and texture, completing a room that feels worldly and effortlessly balanced between modernism and craft.
With limited storage and a compact footprint, the entryway presented a design challenge; however thoughtfully defined zones helped streamline the often hectic arrivals and departures of a family of four. A solid wood bench offers a convenient place to put on shoes while also providing an elegant surface for a decorative lamp. A wall mounted Paul McCobb mirror with small pivoting shelves creates an ideal landing spot for mail and car keys. Efficiently located behind the front door, a custom designed USM wardrobe maximizes concealed storage for coats and backpacks, while a vintage overdyed Turkish rug anchors the space.
